The Cord Front-Drive was the first American production car with front-wheel drive, and it was easily the most innovative automobile offered to the public in more than a decade. The system employed a Lycoming straight-eight engine that was installed backwards in the chassis so that the transmission was at the extreme front. The lack of a driveshaft tunnel let the bodies be mounted very low on the frame and the result was that this Cord was no taller than a person of average height.
The interior has flat floors, allowing for comfortable, spacious seating and the car was set up with a 125 hp, 322 ci side-valve inline eight-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive, three-speed transmission, quarter-elliptic front leaf springs at the front, with rear semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes.
